Japanese art legend Yayoi Kusama has taken over Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum with a major retrospective spanning more than seven decades of her singular career. From her early paintings in Japan and avant-garde experiments in 1960s New York to the polka dots, pumpkins, mirror rooms and immersive installations that made her one of the world’s most recognizable artists, Yayoi Kusama: 70 Years of Infinity traces the evolution of her endlessly inventive universe.
On display through January 17, the exhibition also features new works created specifically for the show, including Infinity Mirrored Room: The Hope of the Polka Dots Buried in Infinity Will Eternally Cover the Universe, shown in the photo above (Mark Niedermann © YAYOI KUSAMA). Following the artist’s death in August at 97, the show has taken on a new significance as a posthumous tribute to an enduring creative icon.
