    Who’s Painting the Alps?

Swiss-French artist Saype is a pioneer of sustainable land art, world-renowned for his biodegradable frescoes painted directly onto the earth. Using a self-developed, eco-friendly paint made primarily from charcoal and chalk, he creates vast, ephemeral works that can stretch across entire hillsides and landscapes. His monumental pieces explore themes of human connection, solidarity and our relationship with the planet, appearing in locations from the foot of the Eiffel Tower to New York Harbor. Designed to gradually fade with the elements, his works ultimately disappear without leaving a permanent mark on the landscapes they inhabit.

Saype mostly works in his native Switzerland, where the mountains provide a particularly dramatic canvas. For one striking project, he traded green hillsides for snow-covered terrain in the French Alps (photo), creating an enormous monochromatic work that seems to emerge from the landscape itself. Like all of his frescoes, it is temporary by design, destined to vanish as the snow melts and the seasons change. The result is land art in its purest form: enormous, beautiful and fleeting, here for a moment before nature takes it back.
