One of Asia’s most beloved celebrations arrives with the full moon, as the Mid-Autumn Festival lights up cities, villages and family tables across the region. Traditionally a time for giving thanks and admiring the moon, the festival is celebrated in different ways from China and Taiwan to Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia. Expect glowing lanterns, elaborate dragon dances, mooncakes in every imaginable flavor and spectacular light displays, including Hong Kong’s International Lantern Spectacular (pictured). This year, the festival falls on September 25, the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, but the celebrations have already begun in Hong Kong, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur and beyond, as lantern displays, markets and cultural events light up the nights ahead of the full moon.
