As analog culture makes a comeback amid digital overload, Camden Art Centre is getting hands-on with a Zine Making Workshop on Sept. 27. The North London space will host artist and Poetic Pastel Press founder Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck for an exploration of zines as artistic, poetic and activist forms.
A zine (short for “fanzine”) is an independently produced publication, usually photocopied or handmade and distributed outside traditional publishing channels. Born from fan communities in the early 20th century, zines exploded as a DIY medium in the 1970s and ’80s alongside punk, feminist and underground art scenes. Few cities have a more iconic zine legacy than London, home to titles like Sniffin’ Glue, Vague and i-D, the latter growing into a fashion giant.
The session begins with an illustrated talk and Q&A before participants create their own handmade zine using drawing, writing, collage and photocopying, finishing with a simple thread-binding technique. All materials are provided, and no experience is necessary.
